Your eyes serve as your window to the world, bringing you the countless beauties of everyday life even as they provide critical information to help you participate fully in that life. But this great gift doesn't perpetuate itself without some care and attention on your part, especially since a variety of eye diseases and vision disorders can threaten your eyesight. That's why Urban Eyecare & Eyewear provides comprehensive eye exams in West Des Moines to help you stay on top of your family's ocular health.
It would be wonderfully convenient if you could tell how healthy your eyes are purely on the basis of how well you think they're seeing. Unfortunately, some of the most destructive eye disorders chip away at your eyesight so slowly that you don't even notice a difference in vision until substantial permanent damage has been done. Even correctable disorders such as refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and/or presbyopia) can sneak up on you, impairing your vision more than you realize.
The only way to be sure about your eye health and function is to schedule regular comprehensive eye exams with an eye doctor. Unlike those superficial vision tests you may receive at the DMV, these exams can detect diseases and disorders in their earliest stages, enabling us to treat them before they do more harm.
Our West Des Moines optometrist, Dr. Lisa Lansink, evaluates every aspect of your eyes and vision in the course of a comprehensive eye exam, beginning with a discussion of your medical history, known eye conditions, and questions about any recent changes or problems you may have noticed. we can then proceed to examine your:
Eye function - A variety of simple, painless tests let us see how well your eyes are tracking objects, focusing, perceiving colors and processing binocular vision (a must for normal depth perception).
Eye health - Retinal examinations under pupil dilation let our eye doctor look at the interior features of the eye, including the retina and optic nerves, while a device called a slit lamp reveals details at the front of the eye. Tonometry (pressure testing) allows us to measure the pressure of the vitreous fluid within the eye to see if excessive pressure puts you at risk for glaucoma.
Vision - By having you view an eye chart through a machine called a phoropter, our eye doctor can determine whether one or more refractive errors are affecting your visual acuity, adjusting the phoropter's lenses to find your exact corrective lens prescription.
All our patients, from infants to seniors, can benefit from a periodic comprehensive eye exam. If you or any of your family members are overdue for this critical preventative step, call 515.223.1000 for an appointment with our optometrist in West Des Moines!
